Bagalkot: Villagers pour out anger against thieves on Australian citizen

Daijiworld Media Network - Bagalkot (SP)

Bagalkot, Nov 20: The villagers of Konkanakoppa in Badami taluk in the district were feeling helpless and agitated over a series of thefts that had taken place in the area since the last three months. It is said that they believed an Australian citizen, Williams K James, who came to their village on Monday November 18 night to be a thief and manhandled him.

During August this year, the village had seen thefts in five households within the gap of a week. The thieves had taken away cash, gold ornaments etc besides two goats. The thieves remained untraced and the villagers used to treat strangers suspiciously, it is said. The villagers had arranged night patrol by voluntary groups but they failed to find the thief.

It is said that Williams, who bought a ticket from Badami to Bagalkot at 9 pm on Monday got down at Konkanakoppa, directly went into the village, and hid himself near the roof of a house. A boy who saw him hiding at night shouted for help. The women rushed there. When Williams tried to push his way through them, some women were hurt. The villagers tied him up to an electric pole. Some villagers informed police who took away the injured foreigner, the locals said.

The police took away eight men for questioning, while women shifted base to houses of relatives by locking their houses.

It is said that Williams from Melbourne had undertaken tour of India alone since September 27. He had arrived at Badami from Kochi, Kerala and began to stay at Bagalkot, it is learnt.

I am shocked to hear this inhuman and barbaric incident that too in a so called a civilized state.
This is to prove beyond doubt how uncivilized, primitive and corrupt people we Indians are!
No basic humanity, understanding, sympathy, decency or ethics, just mob mentality.
It's utter shame that we can never call ourselves a democracy or civilized people in present times.
When Indians are attacked outside we raise a big hue and cry and blow it out of proportion.

Why would an Australian steal goats?
I also doubt bagalkot buggers can understand his Aussie english. He might have said to them "I came today"..and they would have misunderstood as "I came to die" and so thrashed him.

My guess is that the Aussie was drunk or on drugs. Why would he go near the roof of a strange house otherwise. Only drunken or drugged people would do that.

Got down from a bus at dark, entered a village & hid himself under a roof... Imagine the fate of an Indian who would dare to do this abroad. In US blacks get shot for staring at houses. He could have knocked on a door & requested for shelter & hospitality, people wud have been more than happy to oblige

These unpad villagers may not be knowing that there thousands of Indians employed/settled and are enjoying life in a host country (Australia)
These type of silly, irrational attitude towards a citizen of Australia may trigger bad retaliation towards Indian community and it's quite natural to react as a tit for tat.

The Villagers caught and manhandled William on suspicion.
First of all the robbery was going one since three months (gold, cash including goats) and William reaches their village on 18th November. Why he should steal goats ? These types of robberies are
usually done by some local guys. Poor fellow got the awards of life time for touring India.
Police must investigate and find out the facts and if found innocent they must penalize the culprits for their in human action on a tourist.

The westerners are still discovering things and are not scared to roam around in a world that is so hostile and risky.
As a Mangalorean, I will never dare to visit places in Northern Karnataka, where even for me the language would be a barrier (I hardly understand the security guy from Bijapur in my apartment building, who speaks ghatta kannada). Any misunderstanding and one will end up like this.

Lucky that he was not lynched as lynching has become common after 2014
Best is just enjoy in your own locality but with caution there too.
