Udupi, Nov 18: The Udupi zone auto-rickshaw drivers and owners staged protest in front of DC office, Manipal, here on Monday, November 18, against two-wheeler rental services in Udupi.
Pradeep Poojary, president, Manipal Auto Union and other members submitted a memorandum copy to Udupi DC G Jagadeesha.
“Permission has not been given for Bounce Company to run an agency here. If they have got permission at state level, then no one can stop them. Till this issue gets cleared, Bounce Company should not give vehicles for rent,” the DC announced.
K Raghupati Bhat, MLA Udupi, said, “So far 9 unauthorised Bounce two-wheelers have been seized in Udupi. I will discuss the matter with the concerned department.”
The main reason for the protest is that the two-wheeler rental services are dominating the market and taking away business from rickshaw owners in Udupi. The two-wheeler rental services have become a fast growing business and people prefer rented bikes as it is cost effective. Many rental agencies have opened in Udupi and have not obtained the required permissions, the protesters informed.
Anand C Kallolilikar, CMC Commissioner, Councillors like Mahesh Takur, Harish Poojary, Prashanth Kundar, Shashikanth Kundar, Sukesh Kundar and others were present.
The strike received a mixed response from auto drivers.
