Mangaluru, Nov 17: The chief district and sessions court here, which conducted hearing into the murder of Daniel Fernandes (56) from Barebail near Yeyyadi in the city, found that the charge of culpable homicide not amounting to murder levelled against the accused was proved against the accused. Accordingly, the judge sentenced Jagadish Shetty (49) from Barebail to seven years of rigorous imprisonment.
Judge of the court, Kadlur Satyanarayana Acharya, who conducted the hearing, also imposed fine of Rs 10,000 on the accused. If he fails to pay fine, Shetty will have to undergo a year's additional simple imprisonment, he ruled. He also said that the wife of the deceased Daniel would be eligible to claim compensation from the district legal services authority.
On September 20, 2018, a fight had broken out between Jagadish Shetty and Daniel, at the end of which Jagadish had reportedly dropped boulder on Daniel. Daniel, who suffered critical injuries, had been admitted into a hospital where he breathed his last on September 23.
Raju Poojary Bannadi, public prosecutor, had argued the case on behalf of the prosecution.
