Mangaluru, Nov 17: A number of places in Karnataka coast experienced unexpected rainfall along with wind of high velocity on the evening of Saturday November 16. The coast was enjoying sunny weather since the last some days. Lightning killed a person in Karkala.
The deceased was Vishwanath Naik (54) from Erlappay in Karkala taluk.
Several parts of Sullia taluk also got whirlwind along with rain, which inflicted lot of damages. A huge tree which fell across Uppinangady -Kadaba road blocked traffic for some time. A tree got uprooted on a Maruti Omni when it was moving at Venoor in Beltangady taluk, but the occupants of the vehicle escaped unhurt.
A large number of coconut, areca nut, and rubber trees got uprooted in Kadaba area due to heavy rainfall. A huge branch of a mango tree which fell across Uppinangady-Kadaba road at Athur, Ramakunja, threw traffic out of gear for sometime before the police, helped by locals, cleared the road.
Rainfall was heavy also at places like Kalmadka, Enmoor, Pambethady, Panja and surrounding places where on account of whirlwind, many areca and banana trees fell to the ground.
A number of places in Udupi district got normal rains while it was heavy in places like Kollur, Karkala, Kundapur, etc. Udupi town which enjoyed sunny weather till afternoon, got rainfall coupled with thunder in the evening.
A house belonging to Ramesh Devadiga in Karkala Kasba village was damaged due to rains. A few places suffered from power outages and telephones went dead.
The meteorological department has predicted rain in a few places in the coast. In the prediction that is valid till Monday morning, the department said that a few places in south interior Karnataka may get rainfall while northern interior Karnataka will be mostly dry.
