Mumbai, Nov 16: In an unfortunate incident onboard a SpiceJet Surat-Mumbai flight, a 4-month-old baby girl died of an unknown reason. On Friday, the infant Riya, who was with her mother Preeti Jindal and grandparents, most likely lost consciousness without her family realising it. According to airport sources, Riya and her mother were taken to the airport medical room after the flight landed in the city.
“The infant did not respond to cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), after which she was rushed to Nanavati hospital, where she was declared dead on arrival,” said an airport official. There has been no comment from the hospital staff in this regard.
The flight took off from Jaipur for Mumbai via Surat. The family boarded the flight from Surat.
As per one of the airport officials, “The mother told the doctors that she fed her daughter around 5.30 am after which the baby went to sleep. The family noticed there was no movement from the child onboard, but did not report it to the crew, assuming the child was asleep.” However, even after several moments passed, the family noticed the baby showed no movement. The family realising the gravity of the situation reported it to the crew, after which emergency medical assistance was requested.
A SpiceJet spokesperson, in a statement, said: “After landing, a passenger informed the crew that her daughter is unconscious. ATC was requested for medical assistance, while the aircraft was taxiing to the parking bay. The infant was deboarded along with her mother and grandparents and taken to hospital.”
Initially, the infant was sent for a post-mortem to Dr RN Cooper, Municipal General Hospital, but since they could not establish the cause of death, the samples were later sent to Sir JJ hospital for further investigation.
