Kochi, Nov 13: The November issue of US-based magazine, National Geographic has featured an article praising the five nuns, who protested demanding the arrest of Bishop Franco Mulakkal of Jalandhar Diocese on the accusation of rape of a nun.
The main article of the magazine named, 'Around the World, women are taking charge of their future' carries the snap of the five nuns, belonging to Kulavilangad convent of Kottayam, Sisters Nina rose, Ancitta, Anupama, Josephine and Alphy. They are termed as 'Defiant Sisters, India.'
The news which is published alongside the snap of the sisters says that the five nuns were asked to maintain silence by their superiors on the matter of rape of a nun by Bishop Franco. However the gutsy nuns refused to budge and held a two-week protest in September 2018, outside the Kerala High Court, demanding the arrest of Bishop Franco. The Bishop, who acted to be unaware of the whole issue was finally arrested and later released on bail. The article also says that the church did not support the nuns but reprimanded them and also did not pay their monthly allowance.
The five nuns defied the resistance from the church and took the support of the public and held a two week protest demanding justice for the nun, who was sexually abused by Bishop Franco. Their protest finally led towards legal action against Bishop Franco.
