Sullia, Nov 7: Three trees got uprooted on the road in and around Balpa on Subrahmanya - Manjeshwar state highway on Wednesday November 6 evening. After a tree fell on a moving Alto car and a scooty near Balpa - Guthigar cross, car driver, Ganesh, suffered serious injuries. Two more who were seated in the car too sustained injuries that were not life threatening. The rider of the scooty had providential escape.
Ganesh was admitted into the hospital at Puttur and then taken to Mangaluru as he needed advanced treatment.
Balpa area initially experienced lightning and thunder on Wednesday evening. Strong wind also began to blow. The occupants of the car that was damaged in the accident were retired assistant sub-inspector, Janardhan, and his wife, who are residents of Badakkodi. They were travelling to Kujumbaru in Devarahalli village for the house warming ceremony of a relative. Ganesh, Janardhan's cousin, was at the wheel of Alto car.
When the car reached Balpa - Guthigar cross, a roadside tree fell across the road due to strong wind, and the car and the scooty were moving on the path of the falling tree when the accident happened.
Ganesh not only suffered injuries to his head, he got tossed to the road due to the impact of the falling tree. Janardhan and his wife too were injured. A branch of the falling tree came down on the scooty but the scooty rider luckily escaped with minor injuries.
A journalist from Subrahmanya, identified as Bharat Nekraje, who was returning from Puttur, helped Ganesh and the other two in his car to Puttur and admitted them into a private hospital. The locals had called for ambulance immediately after the accident, but realizing that delay might prove detrimental, Bharat decided to take the injured in his car.
Clearance of fallen tree went on the whole night thereafter by Mescom and forest department staff. Power supply was suspended to many areas.
