Mangaluru, Nov 6: The BJP government is just spending huge amounts on advertisements promoting the welfare of women in the country. But in reality it does not care women. Even the highly publicized campaign for 'Beti Bachao, Beti Padao' is limited only to the flex boards of its advertisements all over the country. This is very evident in their rule of past six years at the centre," said Dr Pushpa Amarnath, chief of Karnataka State Mahila Congress.
Dr Pushpa was in the city on Wednesday, November 6 and addressed the scribes regarding the MCC elections of the city. She asked the women folk of the city to rise to the occasion and support the Congress party as it is the only political party which honours and respects women in this country.
Dr Pushpa said that the BJP has forgotten its own assurance of giving 50 per cent reservation for women in all areas.
"The state BJP government led by CM B S Yediyurappa has not announced any schemes after it came to power. During the Congress regime, former CM Siddaramaiah has introduced people-friendly schemes like Anna Bhagya, Ksheera Bhagya and Indira Canteen, which are hugely success as they helped the poor section of the society. Instead of introducing new people-friendly schemes, the BJP government is trying to put an end to the programmes started by the Congress party. So the intelligent public of Mangaluru should understand that Congress is the only party that will favour the women and poor people and vote accordingly in the MCC election," said Dr Amarnath.
Replying to a query on the improper handling of Indira Canteen in the city of Mangaluru, Dr Pushpa said, "An investigation should have been conducted in case if there was any mismanagement of Indira Canteen in the city. These canteens were established with the sole aim of helping the poor and needy people of the society. It is not correct on the part of BJP to close down the canteens giving lame excuses."
When Dr Pushpa's attention was drawn towards the scam that has taken place in the Underground Drainage (UGD) system implementation under ADB project during the tenure of Congress party in the MCC, she replied that though she does not have details of the issue, she will take up the same with the senior leaders of the party and put it right.
Savitha Ramesh, election observer, Shalet Pinto, district Mahila Congress president and Janet D'Souza, general secretary, National Mahila Congress were present in the press conference.
