Mangaluru, Nov 6: Former chairman A S Kiran Kumar inaugurated three-day first 3D international full dome film festival and planetarium conference here at Pilikula Planetarium on Wednesday, November 6.
The event is organized by Pilikula regional science centre society and Karnataka science and technology promotion society, department of information technology, bio technology, and science and technology in association with Infovision, Evans and Sutherland USA.
The theme of the film conference is trends in Planetarium technology. The tickets can be booked on bookmyshow.com. Apart from main planetarium, there will be two mobile planetariums with five meter domes and a seating capacity of 35 people where 2D movies will be screened. More than 15 films will be screened on 2D and 3D in three days.
The 2D shows include Tales of a Time Traveller, Birth of Planet Earth, Biography of the Universe, Unseen Universe, Lifestyles of the Stars, The Moon, New Horizons, Exploring Pluto, Beyond Cosmic Life and Mars 1001.
The 3D shows are Dawn of the Space Age, Wildest weather in the solar system, Natural selection, Egypt secret of the mummies, Space next, Sea monsters: A pre historic adventure and Dinosaurs at Dusk: The origin of flight.
Addressing the gathering, former chairman A S Kiran Kumar said, "The younger generation these days finds it difficult to see natural sky due to pollution and lot of disturbance, so such planetariums can help them to see the celestial objects. I congratulate entire Pilikula entity to bring out such film festival and make it happen.
“There is a satellite called Astrosat which observes objects through various lenses and this is world’s better with angular resolution and carved its name globally. ISRO enabled educational institutions to build observation instruments which are helpful for students and the research community. Mars mission was excellent example in India to show that things can be done differently with limited source and created curiosity all over the globe.
"We need to remember Vikram Sarabhai for his vision, who made the world recognize our space capabilities. This film festival and conference is great opportunity for the students to experience the planetarium.”
Director Pilikula regional science centre Dr K V Rao welcomed the gathering and scientific officer Karnataka science and technology promotion society Satyakumar Sharma rendered the vote of thanks.
