Bengaluru, Nov 4: The decks have been finally cleared for executing the prestigious Suburban Railway in Bengaluru.
The Extended Railway Board Meeting comprising officials of NITI Aayog, Railway Ministry, Ministry of Planning and Statistics and Finance Ministry have accorded approval for the project on Monday.

The file would next be placed before the cabinet for the final approval.

Bengaluru South Member of Parliament Tejasvi Surya, who has been stressing the need for Suburban Railway Project for the city with the NITI Aayog, Railway Minister and top bureaucratic circles has hailed the approval of the project as a huge "milestone" in addressing the Urban mobility crisis of Bengaluru.

"We achieved a huge milestone on Monday in addressing the urban mobility crisis of Bengaluru. Our city is the only metro which does not have a Suburban Railway Network. The Suburban Railway, something that Bengalureans have been asking for the last 33 years, finally gained the clearance of the Extended Railway Board on Monday," Surya said in a statement.

"The project ran into hurdles, mainly with the NITI Aayog, with its proposal earlier this year. In lieu of this, I met the NITI Aayog CEO Shri Amitabh Kant last week and stressed the importance of Suburban Railway for Bengaluru. I informed him that the Revised DPR has met the guidelines laid down by the NITI Aayog and requested him to approve the project soon,’’ he said.

The BJP MP mentioned that the project was earlier cleared by the Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa, in August.

"I also met with the Railway Minister last week. As a citizen aggrieved with the traffic of Bengaluru, I brought to his notice the importance of the Suburban Railway and requested for his early clearance,’’ he said.

Surya said: ``The efforts of Union Railway Minister Piyush Goyal, Minister of State for Railway Suresh Angadi and all Members of Parliament from Bengaluru PC Mohan and Union Minister DV Sadananda Gowda, have borne fruit today."

"It's good to note that all the authorities sat together today and cleared the project, without any further hurdles. It will next come up for approval with the Union Cabinet. All of us Members will meet the Prime Minister and request him to clear the project soon,’’ he added.

Wish it will happen in our generation. There is no clue when it will start and will it finish at all. Look at the highway work in Karnataka and present condition of roads! There is no one responsible and accountable!

Call me pessimistic, but i wont believe anyone until the project materializes. These politicians will show us enough of mirages till the elections are over. After that, no one cares.
On Twitter, this Tejaswi Surya expressed concern over Bannerghatta road's condition in Bangalore. After that he got a very small stretch repaired. Today if you pass by that stretch, the dust is so much that you can't see the vehicle in front of you. This guy may be young and seem energetic and enthusiastic. But on ground, he is no different from any other politician. His worship of Modi never ends.

Dear Tilak, Blore & shailu, kolkatta, for your info....

The state government approved the suburban rail system on 5 July 2013. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah approved the system in the 2013-14 state budget that he presented on 9 July 2013.[3] The budget proposed the setting up of the Bangalore Suburban Rail Corporation Limited, a special purpose vehicle to implement the project, and allocated ₹87.59 billion (US$1.3 billion) to implement the system.[4][5] The DULT plans to build four of seven lines proposed by RITES.[6]

Union Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu announced of a partnership with Karnataka government for suburban railway network in Bangalore, in the 2016-17 railway budget, but did not allocate any money.[7] On 6 February 2016, the state government proposed a modified version of the original RITES plan. The government proposed constructing a rail link between Whitefield and Byappanahalli at an estimated cost of ₹1000 crore as Phase One of the suburban rail project.[8] The state government appointed RITES to study the feasibility of the project, and the latter's survey deemed the project was feasible. In November 2016, the Indian Railways and the Department of Urban Land Transport (DULT) also concluded that the project was feasible.[7] However, the Railways found that the proposed Phase Two of the project, linking Tumkur and Yeshwanthpur was not feasible.[9]
