Udupi, Nov 1: Home minister and district in-charge minister Basavaraj Bommai spoke to the media in Udupi on Friday, November 1 on the issue of celebrating Tipu Jayanti and said, “The State government is planning to remove lessons on Tipu Sultan from the history text books because the students should not learn controversial issues. We will examine the same in the coming days. Controversy on Tipu’s history has been there since a long time, but today it is more prevalent. This issue is not yet discussed by the cabinet,”

Regarding the increase in cyber crime, minister Bommai said, “After the implementation of Digitization in India, the number of cyber crime cases are increasing day by day. Moreover, Karnataka is advanced in information and technology. Hence, we have set up CEN police station in each district. We have decided to set up eight additional CEN police stations in Bengaluru and few additional stations in all commissionerates in the state. We also have modern cyber crime detection lab.”

Responding to increasing ganja peddlers in the city, Bommai said, “We have zero tolerance towards drug selling and consumption. A special squad has been formed to deal with the problem. I have asked ground report on ganja and drug peddlers. We will act based on the same.”

Answering the query on filling the posts of public prosecutors, the minister said, “More than 100 appointments were made directly by the government. As there is urgent need, we will fill 300 posts by outsourcing.”

Regarding hosting of Kannada flag Basavaraj Bommai said, ”I have given instructions to DC that by next Rajyostava, Kannada flag should be hoisted with national flag here in Udupi. Kannada flag was hoisted in all other districts today. No order is given by the government not to hoist the Kannada flag.”

Replying to the query of safeguarding of fishermen while fishing in between border areas, the minister said, “The border issue between states is natural. We will inform Coast Guard to provide security in this regard. We will also take certain measures in this regard. We will think of settling the dispute through the use of technology.”

Our history departments, and our textbooks by design are tainted. At the time of independence, our country was sharply divided on religious and caste lines. 70 years on, we are still not fully united. Our electorates continue to be divided on caste lines and the candidates thereof. You cannot expect a Vokkaliga to be fielded in the constituency dominated by Lingayats for example and so on.

There are way too many hard facts which can continue to divide our country for ages. The need of the hour is to raise the intellectual level of our countrymen so that they can react maturely to past commissions and omissions. Rewriting parts of history to serve the narrative of a particular political party is a definite no, very much for the same reasons as to why history was diluted in the first place during post-Independence era.

70 years on, we Indians have just continued with the same instrument used by British to divide the electorate although informally after Independence. Need of the hour is to get out of this mindset.

BJP does not want students to learn facts and decide for themselves - if they do, they will all boycott the party!

I feel you are correct because all the controversies are shown on the social media itself. So why waste time on text books.

It is a shame that political leaders in the Karnataka Government have absolutely no idea as to what education is all about. Education should provide students with tools to critically evaluate situations and develop a mindset that is curious and can creatively come-up with solutions to problems. Removing content from text-books will not change history. Students should learn history as it is. What we are today is because of all that has happened before. History should not be denied. It should be studied so that we may not repeat the mistakes of the past.

Teaching controversial topics in classrooms helps students in judgement, that is to agree or disagree. Let students get to know about Tipu and what he did. Let the student decide to love or hate Tipu.

These BJPeeans had no clue where India is heading to. They kept engage in silly matters, inciting communities with provocative moves and deviating common man's mind from the basic issues . To day's report (Reuter ) broke the news that India’s unemployment rate in October rose to 8.5%, the highest since August 2016, and up from 7.2% in September, Shame on those politicians who misuse power and dividing the society mere for a temporary power.

It would be better if Karnataka government concentrates on solving unemployment, flood relief etc rather then discussing a historical subject in public.

Textbooks only to pass the exams...It is society who plays the bigger role....One cannot change the history by simply removing chapter from the syllabus.

Control of crime is not the priority for this home minister. Tipu is being used for political gains. One government initiates Tipu jayanthi and other one remove Tipu from history. Who is responsible for peace in the state, good roads etc? Other day Mangalore DC orders officials to repair one road just because vice president of India is arriving. So, all officials are working only for stupid politicians. Shame on our democracy that we elect such useless people as our representatives.

    Hello Bommai,
Your president dont know at present how many districts are there in Karnataka.

What you know about the history .
    Tippu sultan dies in 1799.
People who knew about him written this history.
They are not ediots like you.

Mr. Bommai...you also has studied about tipu in case you have studied properly....!!!!!??? Now when BJP came to power he became a controversial king. Leave it. Instead of rewriting history concentrate on flood relief. Please do not try to divert the mind of people of Karnataka. Ganja was in use since my my college days (33 Years) but still the police is trying to catch the people who are involved....!!!!!!! I think ministers are involved in growing Ganja and not farmers ....!!!!???? if there is no blessing of politicians and our police these things would have curbed many years ago.
