Mangaluru, Nov 1: The huge cyclone that rose from the Arabian Sea has been creating lot of problems for the people living in coastal Karnataka. The cyclone has directly impacted the lives of farmers and fishermen while strong wind and rain have been throwing normal life out of gear besides creating lot of problems for the vehicle users. The torrential rainfall in various parts of the coast has also resulted in power outages at some places. The farmers, who were expecting to harvest their paddy crops, are distressed as the harvest is getting destroyed.
Farmers and fishermen say that they have never witnessed fury of cyclone of this magnitude in the recent decades. The meteorological department expects the rain and storm to continue for a couple of days. It has warned fishermen against venturing into the sea till November 4, as wind with a speed of 40 to 50 km per hour is expected to blow and waves are expected to rise.
In addition to keeping five ships of the Coastal Security Force, two Dornier planes have been kept in readiness to face any eventuality. Six Coast Guard ships have been stationed in Mangaluru port and Kochi.
Udupi district administration has asked people to call toll free No. 1077, 0820 - 2574802 / 2574360 in case of emergency. In view of alert issued by the department, fishing boats have rushed back to the shores. Deputy director of fisheries, Ganesh K, has reminded the fishermen that as per the warning, they should stay away from the sea till November 4.
In view of cyclone, the district administration of Kasargod has declared holiday for all educational institutions of the district on Friday.
