Mangalore, Aug 3: Parts of the deck, ladder, gas cylinders and other parts of the sunken 'Asian Forest' ship, that were washed away and reached the Someshwar shore, were collected by a gang of local people. They used gas cutters to cut down larger metal pieces into smaller units to transport and sell them elsewhere. The things were planned to be transported on Saturday August 1 night, for sale elsewhere.
District crime intelligence bureau officials, headed by inspector H N Venkatesh Prasanna, who got to know of the racket, raided the spot. They confiscated 5.1 tonnes of iron parts, 13 huge gas cylinders, gas cutters and other goods, valued at around five lac rupees. As soon as the police party reached the spot, those engaged in cutting down the ship’s parts into pieces, ran away. The things so taken over have been handed over to Ullal police station.
