Udupi: Suicide case of Fr Mahesh D’Souza and plight of three youngsters

Daijiworld Media Network – Udupi

Udupi, Oct 19: Fr Mahesh D’Souza, the assistant parish priest of Shirva Church and principal of Don Bosco School breathed his last on Friday, October 11 and his funeral was held on Tuesday October 15. Sadly the death has affected the lives of three innocent youngsters. They have claimed that they are not connected to the death in any way.

Prima facie, the death looked like suicide and the police have said that they will act and take up investigations only after the official post–mortem report is received. So far only the witnesses, who were there in the church premises after the body was found, have been questioned and their statements have been taken.

Fr Mahesh D'Souza

But so many rumours have been spread in the social media regarding this death. One of them is blaming three youngsters for the suicide. The rumours have been doing rounds since a week that these three youngsters picked up a quarrel with Fr Mahesh D’Souza and that ended in his suicide. The photos of these youngsters were also circulated in the social media. Some fake reports in social media even went to the extent of calling these youngsters as murderers.

The fact is, these three youngsters were not involved in any fight with Fr Mahesh D’Souza in the recent past. One of them does not even live in Shirva area now, but works in Gujarat.

The youngsters did their best to defend themselves by saying in the social media that they did not have any fight or argument with Fr Mahesh. But the rumours moved faster than the facts.

They did not have any other platform to narrate their plight. Now the youngsters have moved to the cyber crime wing of the police and lodged a complaint. The police are trying to locate the culprits who started circulating the fake news.

The youngsters and their parents have said that they have suffered mental agony because of the social media propaganda and cannot move in public freely. The future of the youngsters is also in trouble, they complained.

Meanwhile it is learnt that superintendent of police (SP) Nisha James is personally supervising the case and watching the developments and the team of investigators is waiting for the post-mortem report.

One of the victim youngsters told Daijiworld that no innocents should be punished like this without proper evidence. “Circulating our photos in social media has hurt us a lot.” he said.

It is widely believed that the culprits spread the wrong rumours by using the photographs of youngsters to mislead the public.

Prima facie the death of Fr Mahesh D’Souza looks like a case of suicide.

More than 10,000 people had attended the funeral of Fr Mahesh D’Souza.

Accusing these boys is as good as killing them as their life is being sucked out. So let us all stay away from demonic influence of slander gossip , but rather build one another up during those trying times.

I pray God sends across Godly counselors to help them weather the wrong blame game that they are going through.

I don't think Fr. Mahesh was forced to commit suicide. It was his choice to end his own life. In today's world, one has to be strong and thick skinned. Most priests are trained to be strong and even face martyrdom. Disagreements between the priests and laity is normal because the Church has to maintain the checks and balances. Most of the time such disagreements are resolved by the superiors and in this case also it would have been solved in time. Roman Catholic Church has a very good system and that is the reason the Church has survived for thousands of years. This is the time for laity to pray to give the strength and courage to deceased family, the Bishop and the fellow priests.

Fortitude is one of the gifts from Holy Spirit. The priests are ordained with the 7 gifts of Holy Spirit. Thousands died in martyrdom for the sake of Church. I don't know what happened to Fr. Mahesh, such beautiful soul, in a spur of moment. I think it is the weakness of humanity.

"Fortitude is willingness to stand up for what is right in the sight of God, even if it means accepting rejection, verbal abuse, or physical harm. The gift of fortitude allows people the firmness of mind that is required both in doing good and in enduring evil. It is the perfection of the cardinal virtue of the same name." (Source: Wikipedia)

On such sensitive matters resorting to allegations against individuals can tarnish the image and good name of innocent people. Let law takes its own course and truth will reveal. Unfortunately trial by gossip and social media is not put to an end as people have more time to gossip without realising its consequences.

Thanks Daiji for telling about the ordeal of the boys. No innocent should suffer even for a minute. Pain of sudden untimely death is being moaned. We do not need to hear about the innocent suffering in the name of investigation. SP Nisha James is tough and she won't allow innocent to suffer, we are certain.

Spreading rumor or fake news should be considered as criminal offence. Watts app or Facebook must compensate to the effected person. Bitter truth is that both of above social media platforms are standing on fake news only.
Hope those guys will get justice.

Thank you Daijiworld for bringing out the story on behalf of the young boys. As a mother of two young boys I can quite relate what the boys and their parents are going through. We as Netizens have to be extremely cautious before forwarding any random messages. Would we forward or circulate if one of them was our child? For that matter why act in a haste? Is it just to prove that I got the message first or I am the source to this? Let's make this a better world for each one of us, let's not crucify someone with our half baked truth. Let's be patient and understanding , and slow to judge and condemn.
Dear Boys and the aggrieved parents,
We as a society owe you an apology for punishing you for something you haven't done. I empathize and understand how difficult it must be for you to move around and face the society. Stay strong my brothers and keep your head high. Never ever lose hope, justice maybe late but it will be done. Much love and sincere prayers.

in this digital world, we receive lot of garbages which we pass on to others as if it is a breaking news discovered by us. We do filter few messages which making comments on our religion or the political parties to which we lend support. Question is why do we have to forward any religious or political messages? Just read it & delete it.
