Bengaluru, Oct 18: The activities of terrorist sleeper cells have intensified in coastal Karnataka said home minister Basavaraj Bommai.
Speaking to reporters at Mysuru, Bommai said the sleeper cells were active in Bengaluru and Mysuru and hence National Investigation Agency (NIA) is taking extra precautions. “Movement of cadres of terrorist group Jamat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) in coastal as well as interior Karnataka is suspected,” he said.
Bommai added that JMB has also expanded its network in coastal regions of Bay of Bengal and Arabian Sea.
Bommai had earlier announced that a Bengaluru specific ATS will come into force from November 1. In the past one year, several JMB cadres were arrested around Bengaluru and explosives were seized from their possession.
As movement of Bangladeshi immigrants has intensified in the state, the police have become more vigilant. Police are frisking people and are on lookout for suspicious people and activities.
“JMB has spread its activities in states like Jharkhand, Bihar, Maharashtra, Karnataka and Kerala in the guise of Bangladeshi immigrants,” NIA chief Y C Modi had told heads of various Anti Terrorism Squads in a meeting recently.
