Mangaluru, Oct 18: Many parts of the twin coastal districts received heavy rains with thunder and lightning on the evening of Thursday, October 17. Most of the rural areas fell into darkness as the power was cut off. One elderly woman lost her life in Moodbidri taluk when lightning struck her.
The city of Mangaluru received heavy rains with lightning and thunder in the evening of Thursday. Beltangady, Guruvayanakere, Puttur, Sullia, Subramanya, Uppinangady, Kadaba, Madanthyar, Bantwal, Ullal, Vittal, Kanyana and Venur also received good amounts of rain.
In the district of Udupi, areas around Belman, Mundkur, Thekkatte, Karkala, Shirva, Kaup, Siddapur, Brahmavar, Katapadi, Padubidri, Kundapur, Kollur and Byndoor received heavy rains. Udupi city area also received rains in the afternoon of Thursday.
Appi Shedthi (80), wife of late Appu Shetty, resident of Ajjibettu of Karinje village in the taluk of Moodbidri died when lightning struck her. She was sitting along with her daughter on the verandah of the house when it was raining heavily. Lightning struck the walls of the house at the same time. Though she was taken to the hospital, she died on the way.
House belonging to Janardhana Poojary, a resident of Arambodi village of Venoor got damaged due to lightning strike.
There are chances of more rains on Friday and Saturday due to the development of low pressure in the Arabian Sea near Lakshadweep. The meteorological department has declared orange alert for Friday and Saturday for the coastal and surrounding areas of the state. In addition, fishermen are advised by the district administration not to venture into the sea as there is chance of high speed winds in the range of 45 to 55 km per hour.
