Mangaluru, Oct 12: The city corporation here, which is finding it difficult to process the waste collected by it, has instructed major wet waste producers within the city limits to make own arrangements to process wet waste. It has given the deadline of this month end for this purpose.

Hotels, bar and restaurants, marriage halls etc have to put in place their own arrangements to process the wet waste generated by them. A meeting of the concerned organizations was convened and the participants were educated about the enforcement of civic solid waste rules. Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) commissioner Shanadi Ajit Kumar Hegde, said that demonstration with the help of concerns having expertise in waste processing was also held for the benefit of these waste producers.

Hegde, giving this information at a press meet held at the corporation office on Friday October 11, said that only dry waste would be collected by the official recycling agencies appointed for the purpose from these concerns commencing from next month. He said that information about the same would be posted in the official website of the city corporation.

He said that the National Green Tribunal has expressed unhappiness about the failure of the concerned to completely implement the solid waste management rules within the time limit prescribed. Therefore, the green tribunal has given specific instructions and directed the chief secretaries of respective states to personally file compliance reports in the court. "All the urban local bodies have to seriously handle waste disposal issue. Because of this compulsion, we are implementing the waste disposal and processing rules," he explained.

MCC stop collecting property tax, we will make all arrangements ourself. Why to pay tax to you when you can't make basic arrangements? Ramakrishna mission has taken care of keeping city clean or else Mangalore would have been in last position in terms of cleanliness. Poor's National Highway, poor drinage and waste management facility and our MLA is busy posting in Facebook. Is he really working or just restricted himself to social media? Had lot of hopes in him.

This would be a major step to resolve the problem of solid waste management, it might seem drastic, but we need to take responsibility of our own waste. Landfill will be saved, segregation will be achieved environment can be protected, garbage cess will be reduced, opportunities on efficient waste management will be created, and exchequer will benefit, I think if looked into wisely this is a phenomenal step!

MCC wants to come out of the responsibilities very easily just because they are not capable of complying rules of NGT.

Let them dissolve MCC then and give responsibility to outsource contractors to collect tax and handle waste.
