Udupi: Shocking- Shirva asst parish priest Fr Mahesh Dsouza (36) commits suicide

Daijiworld Media Network - Udupi

Udupi, Oct 12: 36-year-old Fr Mahesh Dsouza, who hails from Moodubelle parish and currently serving as assistant parish priest and principal of Don Bosco School Shirva reportedly ended his life by hanging himself from the ceiling fan.

The shocking news was reported on Friday late night. The reason for the priest deciding to end his life is not known, but entire community, well-wishers, students and parents of Don Bosco school woke up to the shocking news which they found it hard to believe, on Saturday morning.

According to police sources, the deceased must have committed suicide on Friday night between 8.30 pm and 9 pm.

It is gathered that a meeting on church related event was taking place just before the priest left to his room. It is said he had also attended a teacher training programme in the morning.

The police have not found any suicide note in his chamber. Police also checked the priest’s mobile which is locked. They are verifying the CCTV footages.

The mortal remains of the priest are kept at KMC hospital.

Fr Mahesh D’Souza hails from Moodubelle. Born on March 30, 1983 as the second son of Frederick and Matilda D’Souza, he was ordained as the first priest of the newly erected Udupi diocese on April 15, 2013.

Since 2013, he served as Assistant Parish Priest at Milagres Cathedral, Kallianpur and Mount Rosary Church, Santhekatte. At the same time he was the headmaster –in-charge of Milagres English Medium School.

In 2016, he was appointed assitant parish priest at Shirva Church and principal of Don Bosco CBSE School. He worked selflessly for the development of Don Bosco CBSE School. He was loved by the school children and the parents for his simplicity and kindness.

Funeral rite of the deceased priest will be held on Tuesday, October 15 at Shirva Church at 3 pm.

Dr Gerald Isaac Lobo, the bishop of Udupi Diocese, and all the priests of the diocese have condoled the death of Fr Mahesh.

The worst kind of Sad is not being able to explain Why ?
What triggered this to be caused needs to be investigated.

Don't just scrape of the first layer and think it's okay. The cycle of this reaction must be stopped and we need to get to the root of it.
Fr Mahesh will rest in peace only when what caused him to take this step is rooted out. This is not only for his souls peace and rest. But for the family , community as well.
Please stop building churches worth crores, and start to build the lives of people around you.
Bouquets of flowers and sweet words are not enough to bid adieu for Fr Mahesh.
A well educated person and with Good management skills cannot take this step
    Just like that.
For the Law was given by Moses But Grace and truth came by Jesus Christ .
    John 1-17
The service and time given by Fr Mahesh needs to be valued and remembered, Yes it is too late.
But let's come together and Uproot the cause.
Transfers are not an answer, accountability is important.
If it is not corrected now. Tomorrow it will be someone else for sure.
Let's not forget the service of Fr Mahesh and let's give him real peace and rest.

Your death has alarmed the common people that all was not going well. it is the VOICE OF THE PEOPLE that bring transformation in the society. We hope your death may stand as a deterrent to all religious orders to be empathetic and to pay due attention to the feelings and sentiments of individuals. Obedience to superiors should not be an authoritative order that must be followed.

It is truly appalling to read some of the comments from the readers.

Anyone can be impacted by stress, pressure or emotional distress. When the going gets tough, coping skills fall short and people fail to see a light at the end of the tunnel. Most often, there is not a single trigger but a combination of factors which culminate in drastic decisions. It is easy to be judgmental but difficult to walk in the shoes of someone in distress.

We need to be sensitive to the sentiments of loved ones left behind. Let us understand that they are already having a hard time coming to terms with the tragic loss. If we cannot say anything good, at least it behooves us to abstain from being cruel!

RIP Fr. Mahesh. May God grant you eternal peace and strengthen all your loved ones- family, staff, students, parishioners, and friends to cope with the pain.

“Death is nothing else but going home to God, the bond of love will be unbroken for all eternity”… said Saint Mother Teresa. It is true… Our beloved Fr Mahesh has gone home to God.

When I think of those last few hours of Fr Mahesh, the words of Winston Churchill come to my mind, “I am ready to meet my Maker.. Whether my Maker is prepared for the great ordeal of meeting me is another matter”…. Fr Mahesh embraced death because death seemed so beautiful to him. It is to lie in the soft brown earth, with the grasses waving above his head and listen to silence. It is to have no yesterday and no tomorrow. It is to forget time, to forget life, to be at peace… Dear Fr Mahesh, your death reveals that you were not afraid to die. Your life was so beautiful that death fell in love with it. A Beautiful Novel of your life ended abruptly shattering the dreams of your family members.

No one can replace the grandson of your Granny, the son of your Mom and Dad, the brother of your brothers, the uncle of your nieces… We miss you even though you live in our hearts. Good Bye till we meet again. Fr Francis Lewis.

    Dear Francis Lewis,
You are priest. Atleast, do not glorify suicide and make it acceptable to others to follow this path!!!

The statements of yours are disturbing.
1 "Fr Mahesh embraced death because death seemed so beautiful to him"
No one should embrace death whether in pain or suffering. Death is in God's hand. Suicide is the murder of your own self. Murder is grave sin and bible says that murderers will be sent to hell.

2 "It is to forget time, to forget life, to be at peace.."
Forget life and be at peace?? Are you diminishing the value of life? Are you saying that life has no meaning, and its ok to commit suicide because we are in pain?? Think about the millions of people who are suffering around the world due to various reasons. Should they also embrace death??

    3. "Dear Fr Mahesh, your death reveals that you were not afraid to die. Your life was so beautiful that death fell in love with it."
Really?? are you the really a priest or.. ?? A person who commits suicide (murder) is a hero now?? What sort of misguidance you are providing with this comment? Did he die for spreading the gospel of Christ? Did he die for the country, for you to say that he is not afraid to die??

I am astonished the way you commented, how you ridiculed life, how you diminished the value of life, how you made life look its nothing, when its a gift of God. Life is the most precious thing that our creator gave us! By saying its ok to kill yourself, you are going against the very principle of Bible. Repent now and ask forgiveness from the Lord for misleading people.

    @All,
What happened to Mahesh is very unfortunate and he should not have taken this step. Life is not easy and there are lot of problems for almost each and everyone of us. This doesn't mean that suicide is the answer. Suicide is wrong and hell worthy. Trust your God and Saviour Jesus Christ, with all your heart, even when there is no other way, and He will make way. Take care.

    Regards,
    Lloyd

Fr Francis Lewis time is changed . People are educated and know Bible and scripture better than you people. Our ancestors had great faith religion though they had mislead knowledge of Bible and scripture. But they were guided by Jesus Christ and holy spirit. Your explanation is misleading.person will come and person will go but don't misinterpret things. Even Jesus not challenged scripture. So if you want to mislead don't use your designation.it is still holy to many people because of annointmenent. It is not your fault you people use altar for blaming people who come for mass with great faith. You discipline your self before things going worst

Fr Francis needs a reality check. Invariably there is always religious fanatic who over spiritualises every little aspect of life.

My theory is that this suicide or any other suicide is a murder in disguise. There is always someone else involved too. Someone who gave him stress, or the church rules that made him emotionally breakdown etc etc. Therefore, stop talking about victim alone and investigate properly as a murder investigation. Who dares to die, death is no fun. Fr Francis is hailing death as daring, that is utter nonsense.

    Dear Fr. Lewis,
I was aghast reading your comments or obituary. I leave it to you to decide. It is for the first time, I am reading a priest eulogising Suicide. None of us know the reasons, which compelled Fr. Mahesh to hang himself. It was cowardice on his part to end his life that way and it is all the more worst for an ordained priest to endorse the extreme step taken by Fr. Mahesh. I wonder whether you believe in the preachings of our Lord Jesus Christ. We have been taught from our childhood that it is a mortal sin to end ones life. Jesus is the giver and taker of life. Have you forgotten your catechesim as a child and all the teachings and training at the Seminary before your ordination as a priest. For heaven's sake, please do not preach such sermons from the pulpit of your Parish. Please have a good confession and seek pardon from Lord Jesus Christ for glorifying suicide. Our Lord is very benevolent and merciful. He will certainly forgive you
I can understand and your love and affection for Fr. Mahesh. Please control your emotions. Afterall you are an Ordained Priest and not an ordinary mortal like me. We look upto our priests and Religious as our beacons to lead us out of darkness and from the snares of the Devil and certainly not to push us further into it.
Pardon me, if I have hurt you by my plain, simple and blunt reply. I could not think of a better one, Fr. Lewis. May our Good Lord and Guardian Angel, guide you and guard you always and steer you clear from the dark clouds, which prompted you to glorify suicide.........

God's deciding will and permitting will.

    January 27, 2017
    Public

St. Thomas Aquinas says: "Praise be to Jesus."

"You are asking about God's Deciding Will. No one acts in thought, word or deed without first deciding to do so. It is the same with God. His Deciding Will embraces His Permitting Will and His Ordaining Will. Whatever He permits or ordains is His Deciding Will. Therefore, His Deciding Will is His Divine Will in action. It is the course of action of all grace, human acts, and choices good or bad. God permits bad choices as He respects free will. However, He always allows grace its moment of intervention."

"When someone decides, they choose. So it is with God's Deciding Will. He chooses what grace to send where and just how to intervene towards man's welfare."

"I hope you understand this complicated yet simple concept now."

Are we here to investigate the fact how he died and what caused him to death? There are police involved, and church leaders will take care of that. All have their own investigations. Families are looking only support and prayers and condolences. Don't assume and write and give suggestions. It's painful to the families to read and even for priest Mahesh friends and his congregations. If u have any questions suggestions it's good but not at this time.

May his Soul rest in Peace?
With all the comments here and from all my conversations from dear and near one of the departed soul, It comes to light that Father Mahesh was a peace loving, a simple, and genuinely a kind person.
Assuming that the news of the committing suicide is true, one needs to know what caused such a nice person to be under depression. As far as people who know him are concerned, He had no issues with his family.
He was an excellent teacher and hence was doing well with the job.
If the news is to be believed, he was served a notice of transfer that might have been a cause of the depression. The immediate transfer in any place of the world or any department t are because the person isn’t good at the job or is causing and hindrance to his higher officials by objecting to the illegal moves. Father Mahesh was definitely a good teacher so the only questing remains is Was he forced with the transfer because he wasn’t willing to do something that the officials wanted him to do?
The reason should be out and clear as the society has lost a gem of a person!

No doubt he underwent a terrible mental torture. Therefore, instead of blaming here and there, the bishop of Udupi must give this case to CBI without any delay. There must be a very strong reason to take this extreme step; it could be due to self respect or
could be something very personal which he don't want to share or face. There are things in life one
cannot take it, then they decide which way to go, sadly he took to extreme step. This tragedy must be investigated, if the result is bad, it could hurt catholic church & catholic community.

Lesson for life: all are called to a life of holiness. Because you are a priest or a bishop, you won't automatically become holy. Every individual needs to cooperate with God's plentiful graces.

When we don't have trust and hope in God the Creator, but in the created things, anyone can end up in a miserable situation, later only to be regretted.

Heartfelt condolences. Soo sad and really heartbreaking to hear this news. Let's all pray for his soul. RIP

Mental disorders affect nearly 12 percent of the world’s population – about 450 million or one out of every four people around the world – will experience a mental illness that would benefit from diagnosis and treatment. WHO statistics for 2002 showed that 154 million people globally suffered from depression, which is a form of mental illness. According to WHO, mental health is defined as a state of well-being in which people realize their own potential, can cope with normal life stresses, can work productively, and can contribute to their community.

Mental health services lack human and financial resources in many countries, particularly low and middle income countries. More funding is needed to promote mental health to increase people’s awareness of the issue. In response to making mental health a global priority, World Health Day was first celebrated in 1992 as an initiative of the WFMH, which has members and contacts in more than 150 countries. Each year the UN, through WHO, actively participates in promoting this event.

God forbid if it is not a suicide(which as of now is still not clear!), then the 'church authorities' will have to take a call for the 'murder angle'!. Who are we here to judge a young dynamic active priest(Asst. Parish Priest) having responsibilities of a vast church like 'Shirva Parish' and added to that a school admin. responsibilities untill and unless we know the "truth". So let us please desist

Dear Friends who are putting down negative messages have a heart and remember the story of Mary Magdalene. Jesus tells us be the first to throw a stone if you have not sinned. Like someone mentioned if u judge others u will be judged by Jesus.

Have a heart like Jesus and not of Stone. Very true that we have to pray for our religious and be sensitive to their needs and feelings. They too feel hurt, sad and are subject to the evil one. Look at them with the eyes of God and empathize with them. God bless us all.

This could also be a case of attempted robbery in the night and subsequent killing and hanging to look like a murder. All angles should be investigated by the Police as it looks impossible for a man of God to commit suicide. All the possible angles should be thoroughly proved and the culprits if any should be brought to justice.

Very true. I totally agree with what you are saying, I feel he was as human as each one of is. there are so many around us who would need to be understood, talked to. Having a helpline for the Priests and the other religious would do good. They are in the spotlight to be always good, They have so many problems and no one to talk to, unlike the rest of us who have family to go back to and they will understand. I feel for all the people who are undergoing depression, or fighting a losing battle to the pressure of the world around us. Hope this will act as a wake up call to the others that even a person who looks all happy on the outside may be broken and hurt on the inside.

Jesus on why you need to pray for your priests...

    Message to John Leary.

    Wednesday, July 17, 2019:

God the Father said: “I AM WHO AM is telling you how I saw the Hebrews suffering from the slavery of the Egyptians. This is why I appointed Moses as the ‘deliverer’ of My people. Another king took over after Joseph’s help with the food, and the Pharaoh put the Hebrews into slave labor to build his supply cities. Just as I appointed Moses, so now I am appointing many prophets to prepare the people for the coming Warning and tribulation. The people of this world are being led astray by the devil, and they are turning evil in their lifestyles. I am preparing My faithful to be separated into My refuges, so I can bring My punishment down upon the idolaters of sex and greed. Trust that I will protect My faithful.”

Jesus said: “My people, without Me, you are nothing. My Body and Blood feeds you your spiritual sustenance, and only those people who eat My Body and drink My Blood will have eternal life. This is why the devil is trying to get rid of My Eucharist in the Host because he is weak to My power. This is why the devil attacks the priests, the hierarchy, and My Church people. He wants to do away with the Mass because My consecrated Hosts are his number one target. This is why you need to pray for your priests, bishops, and cardinals to remain faithful to Me. Pray that the Mass is not changed, since it should not be a one world religion. When you see a division in My Church, you are to remain with My faithful remnant, and do not accept the coming schismatic church. At My refuges you will have My true Mass, and My angels will bring you daily Holy Communion. Treasure My Adoration hours as your grace and strength that will help you to remain faithful to My love. I love all of you, and I will be with you to the end of time in My Eucharist."

If it is suicide there are dozens of reasons for the same.
It is not wholly willful act with 100% presence of mind.
This is not a mortal sin, for a mortal sin to be committed a person has to give complete will knowing that he is going to sin and he is prepared to face the consequences.
There is an instance when a lady came for confession to St Padre Pio, who had long time worry that her husband committed suicide and he is in hell.
St. Padre Pio ( who had the God given gift of seeing the person's sins of the sinner ) , did tell her to offer penance for his soul, as he is in purgatory because he did repent at the last moment before touching the water ( while jumping from the bridge).
Hence we should not judge any one.

Tears come out while read. Catholics should remember priests of Catholic Church in our prayers. They too human beings and have problems. But with prayers they can overcome whatever giant problem may be.

We do not know what happened to him to end his life. Jesus is with us always caring and protecting and carryin while we cant walk in life.

Depression might be the cause. When we are not praying, when we are away from God, we lose our Hope. Talents are not important. Prayer for a priest is a must coz he is ordained to Pray the Office of reading and Offer Holy Mass. Anyway I strongly believe that Depression is the only cause which he could not solve through prayers. Our sympathy to his mom n dear ones. May his soul rest in peace. Prayers assured to the bereaved family.

Some people say this is a cowardly act but I do not think any person will commit suicide without any strong reason. For that matter, I do not support suicide also. While some are calling for an investigation, some fail to understand that a Priest is a human being like any of us. The big difference is they have chosen the life in service to others. But as they as human they too have their trials and temptations, ups and downs in their lives.

Perhaps, the Bishop should consider a helpline for Priests,Nuns and religious let them be annonymous (if they desire so) by getting them timely Pychiatric help and Counselling over the phone.

There might be some strong reason behind this which we might not know .So I think saying anything which may hurt his family or his followers or favorates may be a extreamly wrong .And please do remember that he is not a coward. The cause and nature of calamity does not matter. God alone knows the best. May God's wish be done on this earth.
