Mangaluru, Oct 10: The rainfall in the coast that had faded since some days, gained momentum on Wednesday October 9. Lightning that accompanied rain claimed the lives of two persons.
Harish Poojary (27), resident of Yadpe in Hebri Shivapura is a victim. Another victim is Jamsheer (32) from Perimanna in Kerala who was on a visit to Kodachadri hill as a tourist. Both were killed due to lightning.
Harish was differently abled since birth. He also was suffering from other health complications. Lightning struck when he was asleep on Tuesday night. He turned very ill, and was taken to hospital. But he passed away on the way to the hospital. A report about this incident was filed in Hebri police station.
The other victim, Jamsheer, had come with four of his friends to undertake trekking in Kodachadri hill. The group had reached the highest point of the hill where Sarvajna Peetha is situated when lightning struck. His friends escaped unhurt. Beltangady and surrounding places got copious rainfall on Wednesday evening coupled with thunder. Puttur, Uppinangady, Bellare, Sullia and nearby places also received good rainfall. The city experienced cloudy weather with intermittent sunshine during the day.
Strong wind and heavy rain with lightning and thunder were experienced in Mala village of Karkala taluk on Wednesday. The house of Kalyani Shettigarthi was damaged due to lightning on Tuesday night. Electrical appliances were damaged.
The meteorological department has predicted good rainfall in the coastal region during the next two days.
