Bengaluru, Oct 9: The BJP government led by Yediyurappa will be facing the first legislature session from Thursday October 10 onward. The opposition has sharpened its attack, primarily based on the stated failure of the government to disburse compensation to flood victims. 

The opposition has been demanding to extend this three-day session to ten days, but if the flood compensation issue snowballs, the government may plan to end the session after two days, once the budget and vote on account are approved. 

Although initially the session was planned to be held for ten days, the duration has been curtailed citing by-poll notification. 

At the same time, the opposition is divided as Congress and the JD(S) are opposed to each other. There is also concern about the proposed second round of Operation Lotus in which some JD(S) MLAs reportedly are interested to join the BJP. Therefore, these parties may not be able to mount a combined attack on the state government now. 

If Siddaramaiah gets nominated as the opposition leader, he may attack the government, as he is aware of the practical situation, having personally visited flood-hit areas. Congress and JD(S) plan to highlight the government's inability to get suitable compensation from the central government, duly pointing out that the compensation now released by the centre is grossly inadequate. 

It is said that after discussing the issue with H D Deve Gowda, H D Kumaraswamy has decided to rake up the notion that Yediyurappa does not enjoy liberty in handling state affairs, and that his son, Vijayendra, has been interfering in the functioning of the government. 

The main problem the opposition Congress will be facing in the session is in drawing support from the JD(S) against the government. If Siddaramaiah gets elected as opposition leader, JD(S) is likely to keep itself aloof from him. At the same time, sources say that the JD(S) will decide on extending issue based support to the Congress in assault on the government at the legislature party meeting.
