Dharwad: North Karnataka gripped by heavy rains - houses collapse, three die

Dharwad, Oct 8: Heavy rains coupled with thunder and lightning which lashed parts of Gadag, Dharwad and Chikkamagaluru on Sunday October 6 resulted in the overflowing of water bodies. Rains also damaged a number of houses, and standing crops of maize, groundnut, cotton, horse gram, sunflower etc. 

Several extensions of Haveri town were inundated and power supply was suspended to various areas. In Hoovinahadagali, 14 houses collapsed due to heavy rains on Sunday. The rain also inflicted damage to houses and gave rise to multifarious problems for the people of Chikkamagaluru town.

 

Three persons from Kirasur in Bevur, Bagalakote taluk, died after their house came crashing down on them due to heavy rain. They were Pakkirappa Hadasad (65), Gowravva Erappa (55), and Ningappa Erappa (32). As soon as the house crumbled, fire brigade personnel, assisted by locals, removed the debris and brought the bodies out. Savita, wife of Ningappa, who lost her father-in-law, mother-in-law and husband in the tragedy, and her daughter, were found grieving inconsolably. They survived the accident luckily. 

MLA, Veeranna Charanthimath, visited the spot and consoled the grieving members. He assured that compensation at the rate of five lac rupees for each of the deceased would be released to the family soon. He also asked the gram panchayat to build the house for the family.
