Will not quit party: Goa women's Congress chief on rumours

Panaji, Oct 7 (IANS): The state President of Congress' women's wing, Pratima Coutinho, on Monday refuted certain posts doing the rounds on social media, which claimed that she was poised to quit the party and join the BJP.

Coutinho's comments came a day after Congress MLA Aleixo Reginaldo said that he was hurt by the actions of his party, even as Chief Minister Pramod Sawant praised Reginaldo for doing a good job as an opposition MLA.

Coutinho said on Monday that the social media posts which claimed that she would quit the Congress soon were baseless.

"I will never leave the Congress party. I am here to stay," Coutinho said at a press conference here.

On Sunday, Goa's political rumour mill was buzzing after Sawant met Reginaldo at the latter's birthday celebrations and heaped praises on the Congress MLA.

Responding to Sawant's comments, Reginaldo said: "The Chief Minister has praised me as an opposition MLA. My party has never praised me... But there is no offer to quit from anywhere. I will remain with the Congress."

Reginaldo is one of the five Congress MLAs in the 40-member state Assembly.

Over the last two years, 13 Congress MLAs have jumped ship to the BJP.
