Udupi: Sheena Naik Cherkady - Epitome of model agriculturist

Daijiworld Media Network – Udupi (PH)

Udupi, Oct 7: People often say unemployment is a major issue in India. But for those people, Sheena Naik Cherkady, a 70-year-old man, has set a very good example to show that nature and environment provides employment irrespective of your educational qualifications.

Sheena Naik was born in Cherkady village of Udupi taluk. He has vast experience in the field of agriculture. He has dedicated himself to this field since almost 50 years. People could witness tall coconut trees and also banana plants all across the acre of land which he owns. In the present generation, where farmers prefer inorganic manures, Naik still uses organic manure and his hard work has given him fruitful results.

Many say that Naik is crazy about agriculture. Naik grows vegetables not only on his land but also in landlord’s land. His enthusiasm is always appreciated by the villagers. He grows vegetables in eight acres of uncultivated land of the village landlords. This year he has grown Bottle gourd, Ridge gourd and Ladies Finger in Mullugudde Shashidhar Shetty’s land and it has resulted in a profitable outcome. Twice in a week more than 2400 Bottle Gourds are sent to the market. Each Bottle gourd is sold to the vendor for 20 rupees and a greater margin of profit is earned.

For Sheena Naik’s efforts and love towards agriculture, the agricultural land has given him fruitful results. Government must recognize his efforts and interest and appreciate his woks as Naik is really a role model for all generations of people, especially youngsters. Kannaru Kamalaksha Hebbar, member of the panchayat said that he feels proud about Sheena Naik’s achievement. He said that Naik is protecting the environment as well as doing his social responsibilities. He also does dairy farming, poultry farming, grows pepper, coco and also collects honey. Harish Shetty Cherkady, a local villager says that Naik never expects results but works continuously and he has dedicated his entire life into it. Naik is really an inspiration to the people and Cherkady village is proud to have him.

Naik, an elderly man, who wears a pair of slippers and rides a bicycle, spends his time in agriculture. He has really become an inspiration to most of the graduates and unemployed students. Naik has shown that it is not one’s outlook that matters but the hard work and persistent effort that will help one reach the goal.

kudos for exposing such hidden success story; it is encouragement to similarly situated others. what is not satisfactory is marketing of products of grower. he gets twopence and not proper return; he has not marketing facility to get real worth of his toil; imagine how much the final seller would charge and how much Sheena would have got! any way good reporting. keep doing this. instead of accident and fights and offences such things as this makes one happy to read. regards

Lal Bahadur Shastri, the second Prime Minister of India a brave leader with a deep concern for common man, the kind of leader country needs today.

In a nation, 45 farmers commit suicide each day, a farmer like Sheena Naik Cherkady still are the few hopes for struggling in a nation where two-thirds of the population is below the poverty and nation struggle to feed the poor.

While Shastri was Prime Minister India plunged into famine after a series of countrywide droughts and other external reasons. In 1965, India had to engage in a war with Pakistan. Even as India faced the famine-like situation and was engaged in a full-fledged war with Pakistan, the United States threatened to cut off food supplies to India.

The success of Sheena is the kindle of hope of late PM Shastriji's vision of 'Food basket'. When PM Modi's BJP government has not published data on farmer suicides for the last few years, Sheena brings positive energy to farming success.

We used to see during our childhood days following vegetables 🌶 with us and also with our neighbourhood

    Green Chilly ( mirsang)
    Rompo (green bananas )
    Kereng ( red potato )
    Thambdi bhaji (red bhaji)

Undivided family’s used to cultivate above vegetables (few only mentioned ) and take Mangalore central market in 47A bus or in first city bus to mangalore city .
When the days gone , members of some families went to gulf and other countries for green pastures.

Now the agriculture land is in pathetically shape . Big bushes , no proper roads and surrounding by big apartments !

Really hats up to Sheena Naik .
Let us support these kind of green vegetable entrepreneur!

There is much land to full fill our daily needs. Yes..!! will not get hectares of land, but acres or half acres will get for buy or lease. I also saw, some of youngsters growing paddy & etc., during rainy season in lease land. Regarding water resource, try to make as much as rain water harvesting. Lots of options are there to improve our land & water resources. But we all are busy in laying concrete on open land & rainy water will directly flows to sea. Our houses became big & our thoughts became small.

God Bless Sheena Naik. I look forward to meet such progressive farmers and learn from them the practices they use to get such heart filling yield. Hats off to such farmers.

Friends, Farming/Agriculture will never have any recession. Only issue we will face is soil fertility, help/labor and climate changes importantly. If you find out a way around it, no one can stop you. Happy farming.
