Mangaluru, Oct 6: Mangalore Institute of Oncology (MIO) observed 'MIO Day' at its premises in Pumpwell here on Saturday, October 5.
Senior Oncologist Dr M S Vidya Sagar along with other dignitaries inaugurated the programme.
Speaking on the occasion, vice chancellor, Yenepoya University, Dr Vijay Kumar said, "It is a pleasure to be part of this event. MIO has successfully served the patients from the last eight years. We have 494 medical colleges in the state, but the cancer detection is very low. Only 12% of people get treated for the cancer at the very first stage. Our life is with ourselves. Try to detect cancer at the earliest so that it can be cured."
Mangaluru South MLA Vedavyas Kamath said, "Mangaluru is closely connected to Kerala. Several people come from Kerala and other parts to Mangaluru to get treated. When it comes to quality, positive result, treatment, hospitality, Mangaluru provides you all these. I wish all the best for the young team of MIO."
Director of MIO Dr Suresh Rao was felicitated on achieving the rare distinction of having treated over 25,000 patients with radiation modality.
After receiving the felicitation Dr Suresh Rao said, "Several people have supported me throughout the long journey and had faith in me. I was in Father Muller’s where there was no oncology then. I had to initiate oncology department treating for about 700 patients a year. Then I came to MIO which treats over 1,000 patients a year. Running a private hospital is not an easy job. As of now we do not have any loans to pay and can save a bit. Out of the savings we are introducing schemes for the APL cardholders and MIO Kerala schemes. MIO will be intensifying its efforts in prevention and control of the disease and strive towards providing modern treatment with compassion and empathy."
Meanwhile, Senior Oncologist Dr M S Vidya Sagar, president of MIO Ananth Krishna, along with other dignitaries released MIO brochure with new logo, MIO scheme for APL card holders and MIO Kerala scheme.
Oncologist Sanath Hegde welcomed the gathering. Rhea D'Souza compered the event.
President of Mangalore Institute of Oncology Ananth Krishna, Oncologist Dr Jalaluddin Akbar, Dr Krishna Prasad and others were present.
