Panaji, Sep 21: Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, on Friday while appreciating the decision of the Goods and Service Tax (GST) council to cut room tariff from 28% to 18%, said it will boost the tourism sector in the state. The GST council took the decision at the 37th meeting of the GST Council held here on Friday.
Appreciating the council’s other decisions, as reported in TOI, Sawant said, “Other decisions taken at the GST Council meeting will also directly or indirectly benefit the state. The state government had put up three proposals. Reduction of GST on hotel tariff, bakery products (from 12% to 5%) and fish mills (5% to nil),” he said.
Union finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman appreciated CM Sawant’s presentation on reducing GST on hotel room tariff and said, “Goa’s ministers made a strong presentation on reducing GST on hotel room tariff.”
"The rate reduction on hotel accommodation services is as follows. If the transaction value per unit per day is Rs 1,000 or less then it will attract nil GST. Above Rs 1,000 and upto Rs 7,500 will now attract 12% GST and anything above Rs 7,500 will attract 18% GST,” the Union Finance minister added.
