Kundapur, Jul 14: A unique marriage was conducted in the town recently. It was unique because of the fact that the bride and the groom were neither human beings nor animals and the marriage was conducted not for progeny, but for the welfare of the human beings. The groom was a tree while the bride happened to be a plant.
There is a belief that conducting of a marriage between a pipal (holy fig - Ashwatha) tree, which is considered as a groom and Tulasi (basil) plant as bride, is auspicious. Both pipal and basil have a place of prominence in the Hindu customs. Mallappa Pai, a trustee of the local Lord Venkatramana temple represented the family of the bride while another trustee, Radhakrishna Shenoy appeared on behalf of the groom's family. The marriage was conducted near the Leelaldhar Pond of Kote Lord Hanumanta temple. All the Vedic rituals connected with any other marriage, were performed.
Vedamurty Damodar Bhat headed a posse of priests who assisted in conducting the marriage. A sumptuous feast was served to the guests at the end.
