Beltangady, Jul 10: A herd of seven elephants which had tuskers, cow elephants and two baby elephants in it, destroyed about 1,500 areca nut trees of the department of horticulture besides the agricultural farms of several others at Hosmutt in Charmadi village on Thursday July 9 morning. Rubber plantations and banana trees were trampled upon by the herd.
An ex-serviceman named Ganapati (57) was injured after a herd of three elephants including a baby elephant attacked him at V Badaga village near Virajpet, Kodagu when he was walking towards a tea estate. As a lady who saw the incident raised an alarm, a gram panchayat member named Gini Monnapoppa who was nearby, fired from his gun in the air, at which the herd ran helter-skelter, leaving an injured Ganapati behind.
An elephant that came to Kandakere village near Chettalli, Siddapur, in Kodagu district in search of food, destroyed flower plants. When it tried to pull down a coconut tree by tugging at its fronds, the fronds came in contact with the electric cables, resulting in the electrocution of the elephant.
