Belagavi: Minister holds discussion with officials on avoiding plastic in trains

Belagavi, Sep 4: Union minister of state for railways Suresh Angadi, held discussions with officials on Tuesday September 3 on using alternative to plastic in trains beginning October 2. The railways has planned to totally avoid plastic use in trains from Gandhi Jayanti day this year. He asked officials to examine possibility of using mud cups and bottles instead of plastic in trains.

Sangappa Kumbar from Hooli village in Saudatti taluk, who had brought modern mud cups, told the minister that he would be able to provide mud cups in sufficient quantities which would be better than plastic bottles in looks and convenience. Angadi instructed the officials to examine them and submit plans. Sangappa Kumbar has been supplying mud cups to Goa, KMF, and others. He had started to make mud cups for use in trains and has been supplying mud cups to Hubballi railway division.

The minister, with a view to get first-hand experience of problems in train journey, travelled by train for the second time and checked the facilities offered. He held discussions about converting Doodh Sagar falls area into a tourist attraction. He said that the Goa - Vasco train from Belagavi, which will be experimentally run for the present, would be flagged off on Wednesday at Goa. The train will move twice a week and it will have a stop near Doodh Sagar on experimental basis for ten days, he added.
