Mangaluru Sep 3: Padma Shri awardee Sukri Bommagowda, who is known as the nightingale of the Halakki Vokkaliga tribes, expressed disappointment as her demands pertaining to welfare of Halakki community are not being fulfilled.
Addressing media here on Tuesday, September 3, Sukri Bommagowda said, “When I received Padma Shri award, I had kept forth several demands regarding education, travel, health needs of Halakki community members. I had also requested for the community to be recognized as scheduled tribe. But so far none of my requests are fulfilled. If the demands are not fulfilled, then how is it possible that our community will progress?”
“I have written over 4,000 Halakki songs which have to be documented. The upcoming generation should know about these songs,” she added.
Sukri Bommagowda was in the city as the chief guest of the valedictory function, ‘Vruksha Suraksha,’ organised by South Kanara Photographers Association at Mini Town Hall with the motive of creating awareness among the students about the need of conserving nature.
