Udupi, Jul 3: A few trees located a road leading in from National Highway 17, near Salikkeri bus stand, Bramavar, were uprooted and landed on the buildings of the Continuing Education Centre and an Anganawady on Thursday July 1.
The trees were uprooted at about 3.30 pm on Thursday owing to the high winds and incessant rains that have been lashing the coastal district for a week now.
The monsoon has picked up momentum resulting in damage of private and public property, besides causing sea erosion and threatening the fishermen colonies and plantations dotting the coast.
A meeting of Navodaya Women’s Self-Help Group (SHG), functioning under Navodaya Gram Vikas Trust, was underway when the trees fell on the buildings. Around 20 women members of the SHG were discussing their agenda when the incident took place.
As a result, five women were seriously injured and the rest of them escaped with minor bruises. Sources said that the critically injured were admitted to Mahesh Hospital, Bramavar.
Bramavar sub-inspector P K Lata visited the location and registered a case.
