Kallianpur, Aug 30: The Milagres Alumni (NRI) scholarship distribution ceremony was held at tri-centenary hall, here on Friday, August 30. The programme was jointly organised by Milagres College Kallianpur and Alumni Association.
Dr Gerald Isaac Lobo, bishop of Udupi diocese said, “The main purpose of this scholarship is to encourage students to pursue education and stop them from dropping out due to financial constraints. Let this generous act continue. The alumni should always help their alma mater. Behind this generosity, there is effort and sacrifice. The love and sacrifice shown by the faculty of the college helps shape the future of students.”
“We should all be indebted to the society. We are benefited from the services of other people. Other people are sacrificing for us. If we donate to schools, it will make a major difference in the society. We can experience satisfaction while doing charity,” the bishop said.
Fr Dr Lawrence C D'Souza, correspondent of the college said, “We should not be selfish and should share what we have in life.” Quoting Mahatma Gandhi, he said there is enough for everyone’s need and not for greed.
He also advised students who were awarded scholarships, to help other students in future and hence continue the generosity. “Alumni are the assets of an educational institution and make their alma mater proud with their achievements. Alumni are the ambassadors. Let us think of people, who are underprivileged. Let us help them and support them to better their situation,” said Fr Lawrence.
Mahesh Shetty (alumnus 1986-87) who is the chairman of Nemus Pharmaceutical Ltd Belur and hotelier was felicitated by the institution.
“I have obtained many good things due to Milagres College. There is more competition today. Education is just not enough to lead life. Culture and thoughts are also important. One should set a goal and put honest efforts to achieve the same. Respect teachers and seniors, because they are the first well wishers,” said Mahesh Shetty.
An amount of Rs 6,41,044 was distributed as scholarship by Milagres Alumni (NRI). Around 151 students benefited from the scholarship.
Dr Vincent Alva, principal, delivered keynote address and extended the welcome.
Professor Sophia Dias, alumni secretary, Philip Furtado and other well wishers were present. Alvadore Noronha, alumni president proposed vote of thanks.
