Mangalore: Protest against Self-Assessment Property Tax Scheme

Mangalore, Jun 30: The city committee of CPI-M organized a protest in the city against the Self Assessment Property Tax Scheme of the local City Corporation in its present form, on Monday June 29. The protest was held in front of the office of the City Corporation here.

Party leaders Sunil Kumar Bajal, Muneer Katipalla and corporator Jayanti Shetty led the protestors.  They demanded for the complete withdrawal of the above scheme forthwith.

"The BJP-ruled City Corporation has implemented this scheme. The taxpayers, who used to pay less than a hundred rupees as house tax in the past, are now being forced to cough up ten times more. As the land value in the city has gone up several folds, the tax payers are being victimized by compelling them to pay up heavy taxes.  Tax rates differ on the basis of the flooring of the houses like mosaic, tiles, marble etc., which is unscientific. The new taxes have become an unbearable burden for the poor and middle class citizens of the city," they complained.

The leaders also called upon the citizens of the city to reject the scheme outright.

    The corporation is failing in meeting the needs of people, however doesnt fail in increasing the burden on them. Finally all these money is going to be used by corrupt people in the form of various funds. The underway passage near Padil crossing is still pending and the corporation has not taken any steps to solve this yet.

    SAT system is totally wrong move. The land prices gone up are not benifitted to local people who have built houses. The Builders and Land sellers are benifitted. The tax should be collected from these type of transaction rather than putting burden on Middle class people .

    The modern day amenities are needed and well utilised by High class rich. So it is to be revised and calculated accoring to the area space built area to live. It will give room to corruption and partiality. Let the poor get concession on Tax. Specially old age people they are on either children funds or Pensions. How can they pay heavy taxes?

    These BJP ruller''s are harrasing the middle class people.What has Poperty prices got to do with Tax one is living in the said property o.k. while selling it''s all right he has to the Tax as per market value. Marble and mosaic are a one time investment so they dont have to pay life time.
