Udupi, Jun 30: In connection with the incident of sneaking into a house in Hejmady Sultan Battery area in the wee hours on June 18 and beating up the sleeping inmates, the Padubidri policemen have arrested two accused on Monday June 29.
It may be recalled that miscreants had burnt the lower portion of the back door of the house belonging to Ameenamma in Hejmady early morning on June 18. Kerosene was used to burn the door. They had then sneaked into the house through this hole, beaten up house owner Ameenamma (36), her mother Khateejamma (72) and son Asgar Ali (16) before fleeing. As serial thefts had taken place in the region a few days earlier, the locals had thought it to be the misadventure of the gang of thieves.
District superintendent of police Pravin Madhukar Pawar had formed a team under the leadership of Kaup circle inspector Cheluvaraju and Padubidri sub-inspector of police Mohan Kottary to crack the case. The team, which worked on the lead that Asif from Ullal Mastikatte had posed life threat to Ameenamma some months ago, closed in on the accused. It is gathered that Ammeenamma and Muneera from Bengre were living in the neighbouring flats in Bajilkeri in Mangalore a few years back, and had become friends. Ameenamma had lent 50 sovereigns of gold to Muneera but Muneera was unwilling to give back the gold. After prolonged follow up, she gave back 40 sovereigns of gold and the dispute over the balance gold had soured the relationship between the two.
Abubakker Siddique (23) from Ullal Azad Nagar and Mohammed Riaz from Ullal Mastikatte Junction were arrested and produced in the court. The policemen are on the look out for the other persons connected with the assault.
