Udupi: Apolitical Agitation Demanding Taluk Status for Brahmavar

Udupi, Jun 29: To protest against the exclusion of the proposed Brahmavar taluk formation in the M B Prakash Taluk Reorganization Committee's recent report and to demand taluk status for Brahmavar at the earliest, people came together, sinking differences over their political and other affiliations wholeheartedly, to urge the government to carve out a separate Brahmavar taluk, the dream which the people of the region have been nurturing since several years. The protest was held opposite the office of the special tahsildar Brahmavar in the morning on Saturday June 27.

The protestors were led by the Janajagruti Vedike. They demonstrated in front of the special tahsildar's office and sat in dharna before holding a meeting. Leaders like former minister Jayaprakash Hegde and Pramod Madhwaraj addressed the gathering.  Jana Jagruti Vedike chief convener Baroli Vijayanath Hegde provided leadership and guidance to the protest.

Zilla panchayat members B Bhujanga Shetty and JanardanTonse, BJP leader Baikady Suprasad Shetty, Bharatiya Kissan Sangh Udupi district president Shedikodlu Vithal Shetty, taluk panchayat members Satish Poojary, Veronica Cornelio and Vincent Mascarenhas and the Vedike district president Ullas Shetty were present.

Before the protest, the protestors went in a procession from Brahmavar bus stand to the taluk office in a procession. Students of local schools and colleges took part in the procession enthusiastically.
