Mangaluru, Aug 26: 336 schools located in Karnataka coast including Dakshina Kannada and Udupi were damaged due to torrential rain and flood experienced during the month of August this year.
There are 1,816 schools in the coast. The block education officers have collected estimated loss inflicted to school premises by the rain and handed over the details to the district deputy director of public instruction. The process of submitting the details to the state government is under way.

Although many buildings have suffered extensive damage, classes are being held without any break. Wherever class rooms are damaged, classes are conducted in other rooms.
As compared to Udupi district, loss to schools has been more in Dakshina Kannada district. 221 schools spread over seven blocks in this district have suffered damages. As per the reports, highest loss has been suffered in Bantwal block. 25 schools in the city (south) block, 19 schools in the city (north), 31 schools in Beltangady block, 81 in Bantwal block, 40 schools in Puttur and Kadaba blocks, and 25 schools in Sullia block have been damaged.
In Udupi, 115 schools belonging to five blocks have been damaged. In Udupi block, 12 schools have been damaged, while 20 schools in Kundapur and Byndoor blocks, 8 schools in Brahmavar block, 21 schools in Karkala block, and 54 schools in Byndoor/Kundapura block have suffered damages of varying degrees.
Dakshina Kannada deputy director of public instruction Y Shivaramayya, said that none of the schools are facing any immediate danger now, and that the estimated loss is being calculated now. Deputy commissioner of the district Sasikanth Senthil, said that the report on damaged schools submitted by the director of public instruction has already been sent to the state government.
