Bengaluru, Aug 26: Students who are studying in the 10th standard this year will have an uphill task of answering the question paper in new format. The Karnataka Education Examination Board (KSEEB) is attempting a new method to increase the quality of education and analysing ability of the students.
The board is going to give priority to questions which will have to be answered in a lengthy manner that require skill and detailed explanation. The multiple choice questions will be reduced. In order to bring uniformity in the question paper, the board has decided to share the marks for questions based on main points or subject related and give stress on objective, syllabus and the format of questions. The board has made all the preparations to bring this into action from the academic year of 2019-20 itself.
In the question paper, instead of 40, there will be only 38 questions. It is compulsory for the teachers to teach all the lessons to the students. In this method the logical thinking ability of the students will increase. While writing long answers, the writing skills of the students will develop, in addition to increase of expression skills.
According to an official of the board, this system will encourage the teachers to use new technology in order to find newness in teaching style.
In all the six subjects, the separate marks are given for cognition ability and syllabus-based questions. In First, Second and Third languages, 21 marks are for memory power, 36 marks are for understanding, 39 marks for expression and four marks for appreciation and writing skills are given under cognition ability. Under lesson-based section 28 marks are for prose, 30 for poem, nine marks for supplementary reading, 29 marks for grammar and four marks are for comprehension. For Maths, Science and Social the marks are distributed based on subject-related questions.
From the past many years, priority was given to multiple choice questions in the SSLC question paper and the number of questions that required elaborate answers was very less. The board had received complaint from all quarters that the writing skills of the students is deteriorating due to this style. In addition, writing skills are required more in PUC, graduate, post-graduate and professional courses. So with
a view of providing the students of SSLC an opportunity to get ready for further education, this change is brought. Many years ago, there were questions having five marks, now only one is added according to the information given by one of the official of the board.
V Sumangala, director of KSEEB said, "We have decided make some changes in the format of the SSLC question paper from this year in order to improve the writing abilities of students. A question bearing five marks that requires elaborate answer is added newly. This will improve the quality of study of the students."
