Mangaluru: After long gap, train services resume on Shiradi Ghat section

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Aug 26: Train services on Shiradi Ghat route, which were suspended due to landslides on the tracks, resumed on Sunday, August 25. Huge mounds of mud, stones and rubble had got deposited on tracks between Subrahmanya Road and Sakleshpur stations after which train services between Mangaluru and Bengaluru had been suspended. As landslides continued thereafter, the plans to resume train services early had to be dropped.

The work of removal of mud and stones was completed on Saturday and goods train was run on the tracks on experimental basis.

In spite of hostile weather, the work of clearing the tracks had been taken up on a war footing with the help of labourers and machinery. Mysuru railway division's divisional manager Aparna Garg had personally visited the spot now and then to monitor progress. Southwestern railway general manager, A K Singh, had also inspected ongoing work.

Even though the railway line on Shiradi Ghat has been cleared, the Bengaluru-Karwar train will now be able to move only up to Mangaluru because of landslide near Kulshekar. The Karwar-Mangaluru section of Karwar-Bengaluru train has been cancelled and the train will begin its journey from Mangaluru.

As the work of removal of mud and construction of protective wall is continuing at Kulshekar, the work is expected to be completed by Monday evening. Therefore, movement of two trains has been announced on Konkan railway line.

Kochuveli-Porbandar train will leave Kochuveli at 11 am on Monday. The Ernakulam-Ajmer train will leave Ernakulam at 8.25 pm on Monday.
