Udupi, Aug 24: The two-day Sri Krishna Janmashtami at Udupi Sri Krishna Math concluded with all grandeur with Vittal Pindi on Saturday, August 24.
The Leelotsava popularly known as 'Vittal Pindi' in the coastal region, began in the afternoon with a procession. Clay idols of Lord Sri Krishna and other deities in Madhwa Sarovara were taken out in a procession.
‘Maha Anna Santharpane’ was held as part of the celebrations. Palimar Swamiji served food to the devotees.
The name of ‘Vittal Pindi’ is derived from Sri Krishna’s childhood name ‘Vittala’. ‘Pindi’ has been derived from the word ‘Banda’ which means earthen pot containing milk, curds, butter and so on.
‘Vittal Pindi’ is a celebration of the fun and frolics reminiscing Sri Krishna’s childhood.
‘Mosaru Kudike’, where mud pots containing turmeric and saffron water were kept suspended on wooden poles. People dressed as gollas (servants of Gopala) jumped and hit the pots with sticks, attempting to break them.
The clay idol of Lord Krishna was taken on a golden chariot in a procession around Car Street after which it was immersed in the Madhwa Lake.
The procession had colourful tabloids and was accompanied by tiger dance.
Another attraction was the Kerala Chende team. Usually, people put on fancy dress during Krishna Janmashtami. However, maybe due to rains, there were less people in costumes.
Rain created little disturbances in the beginning. However, the rain did not dampen the spirits of the devotees and thousands visited the Sri Krishna temple.
The programme comprised of various cultural and folk performances like ‘Dollu Kunitha’ as well as film dance was performed at Rajangana here. The tiger dance troupes brought more attraction to the festival.
Thousands of devotees were served in the afternoon during Anna Santharpane. More than 20 teams have joined hands in serving the mid day meal. The food served was served from 10 am to 3 pm.
