Mumbai, Aug 23: In a serious case of security breach at Mumbai airport, a man managed to enter the runway and force a SpiceJet plane to stop on Thursday.
The flight scheduled to depart for Bangalore at 1.10 pm was at N1 taxiway in domestic Terminal 1, when all of a sudden, a man appeared on the runway and started walking towards the aircraft. The man walked under the aircraft all the way from its cockpit till its wheels. A video, taken by a bystander, which has since gone viral, shows the man wandering around the aircraft until he was apprehended by Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) personnel.
As per CISF officials, the man managed to reach the runway by jumping the perimeter wall. The man, who is a resident of Sion, when apprehended by CISF personnel, told them he wanted to see the plane. CISF officials refused to divulge the identity of the man and handed him over to the Airport police.
As reported in Mumbai Mirror, the Airport police enquired about the incident and managed to trace the brother of the man, who told them he was undergoing psychiatric treatment and had skipped his treatment on Thursday. They live together in the slums behind the domestic airport.
Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport spokesperson, in a statement said, "SpiceJet aircraft SG634 was holding on taxiway N1 reported the presence of a man on runway 27. He was picked up from the runway by CISF. The runways scheduled for weekly maintenance activities twice a week on Mondays and Thursdays. Accordingly, operations are shifted to the alternate runway.''
