Beltangady, Aug 23: The police personnel here have arrested two persons on the allegation of creating a WhatsApp group and streaming material having contemptuous content about the gods pertaining to another religion. 

The arrest was made by a police team led by police circle inspector here, Sandesh P G, took into custody Rameez Vittal and Abdul Salam Bantwal. They were produced in the court on Thursday August 22. Another person, said to be the admin of the group from Thumbay, was also questioned. The police are continuing with their search for a few more persons.

 

Some Muslim youths from Bantwal and Vittal area had formed a group in the name, 'Shivaji Fans'. Vikram Das from Beltangady was added to the group. The group having about 40 members continuously featured contemptuous material about the gods of certain religions. 

The police said that Vikram Das, who saw that the group was becoming a ground for blaming Hindu gods, started to use similar language against Muslim faith. Vikram Das filed complaint about some hateful messages which had turned viral. 

The police believe that this is a ploy to ignite communal clashes. They have been probing this incident with seriousness and are searching for other admins of the group.

    FYI The Quran does not explicitly mention any worldly punishment for blasphemy.
