Karwar, Jun 24: On Monday June 22 night, the thieves added to a spate of recent bank robberies, by burgling Sirsi branch of Chetana Cooperative Bank having its head office in Kumta in the district. They took away 5.777 kgs of gold ornaments and Rs 94,015 in cash.
The thieves used duplicate keys to open the locks of the bank shutters. Reportedly, they took away the lockers and almirahs in which gold and cash were stored. The shutter locks were found thrown outside the bank, while duplicate keys were abandoned inside the bank premises. The thieves had snapped the wires of the alarm system of the bank before entering it.
District superintendent of police Raman Gupta, deputy superintendent Vedamurthy, circle inspector Sooraj, crime sub inspector D M Babu and others rushed to the spot on Tuesday June 23 on getting information and conducted inspection. It is gathered, that the sniffer dogs that were pressed into service, could not provide any major clues to the investigators.
