Mangaluru, Aug 19: The department of public instruction in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts have instructed schools to conduct additional classes either on Saturday afternoons or Sundays to compensate for the loss of lessons caused due to serial holidays on account of heavy rains.
Holidays had been announced by the district administration in the interests and safety of the students on account of heavy rains, prediction about heavy rains, and floods. The students had got holiday for successive five days but this holiday is likely to result in truncated teaching of lessons. To compensate for this loss, the schools have to conduct classes on Saturdays or Sundays like in last year.
However, the department has asked schools not to insist on the presence of students whenever bridges on way to their homes have been damaged but not repaired yet. At the same time, they have been asked to monitor the health condition of children coming from flood-affected regions.
In its circular, the department said that the schools should get the school buildings inspected through the engineer and get certificate about the fitness of the building concerned. A decision about when the classes should be conducted, either Saturdays or Sundays, would be conveyed within three days, the circular issued by the department stated.
District deputy directors of public instruction have said that if classes to be held on Saturdays, they will be held on ten successive Saturdays.
