Bengaluru, Aug 16: Chief minister (CM) B S Yediyurappa’s novel strategy to collect relief funds for Karnataka floods has backfired, and he was forced to retract his statement.
On Wednesday, the CM had announced that villages would be renamed after industries and corporate houses who pay Rs 10 crore and more towards state flood relief.
After receiving severe criticism, on Friday, a clarification was released from the chief minister’s office that only new layouts developed in the villages will be named after the donors. However, the names of the villages will not be changed.
The CM’s statement on Wednesday drew flak from critics and opposition. “The name of every village in our state has its own background.
Villagers, who have already lost much in their floods, should not lose the name of their village, too. Don’t keep Karnataka on sale,” JD(S) tweeted from its official twitter handle.
JD(S) also equated Yediyurappa’s decision to that of ‘Tughlaq’.
Meanwhile, critics argued that name of every village has a rich historical and cultural background and renaming villages could lead to loss of identity.
