Mangaluru, Aug 16: Mangaluru city police commissioner Dr P S Harsha inaugurated the new initiative 'My Beat My Pride', which is aimed to strengthen the beat policing system of Manglauru city, here at police commissioner’s office on Friday, August 16,.
It is a unique scheme in which the city is divided into very compact beats and each beat is headed by a police constable or a head constable. Each beat has representatives from the civil society, who are drawn from various communities, walks of life and age groups.
A WhatsApp group will be formed for each beat. From the end of police, the members of this group will be the concerned police constable who is in-charge of the beat, police inspector of the concerned police station and a technical moderator from the commissioner’s office. In this way, it is targeted to enrol a very sizeable population of Mangaluru city into actively helping police to deliver the services of police department.
Another unique aspect of this project is, in addition to the beat constable, all senior officers including commissioner of police will perform the beat duty on one day of a month. This would empower the beat constable and instil a sense of pride in performing the beat duties and at the same time, senior officers will also be well-versed with the realities of the ground level policing.
As a result of this project it is expected that the citizens will benefit with faster delivery of police services like passport verification, job verification and it is also expected to bring police stations visit by citizens to a minimum, as they can follow up the progress of any complaints filed by them through the beat constable.
Going forward, it is intended to develop an App for enthusiastic participants so that they can actively participate in delivery of beat-based police services. At it is in conceptual stage, it will have features by which an interested member of civilian society can login and decide the date and time on which he is ready to offer his services towards the betterment of beat-based police services.
In this background an appeal is made to all Mangalureans to support this initiative whole-heartedly by becoming members of respective beat police group and by offering their suggestions and information and acting as guardians of the concerned beat group.
DCP Crime and traffic Laxmi Ganesh, DCP Law and order Arunangshu Giri, Dr Uday Kumar and others were present.
