Washington, Aug 16: A study observed that a group of children and youth who do not sleep enough and are exposed to more screen time are likely to make impulsive and rash decisions.

According to Dr Michelle Guerrero, lead author and postdoctoral fellow at the CHEO Research Institute and University of Ottawa, impulsive behaviour is linked to mental health and addiction problems. It also results in eating disorder, substance abuse and behavioural issues.

The study suggestss that children are required to allot specific time for their sleep and for the screen. According to the study, no more than two hours should be allowed for recreational screen time. Meanwhile, at least 9-11 hours of sleep at night is considered wise. In addition to sleep and screen time, children and youth must dedicate some minutes towards physical activity. At least 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous exercise is advisable.

"When children follow these recommendations, they are more likely to make better decisions and act less rash than those who do not meet the guidelines," Dr Guerrero adds.
