Malappuram, Aug 16: A mosque in North Kerala has provided its prayer hall for conducting postmortem on landslide victims. The Mujahid Mosque is located at Pothukallu near Nilambur in Malappuram district.
A major landslide occurred in Kavalapara in Kerala on August 8. More than 60 people were reportedly feared to have been buried alive in this tragedy.
The numerous decomposed bodies surfacing resulted in urgent need for having a facility to perform post-mortem. The government hospital was over 45 km away, due to which the officials were looking for an area to set up a temporary postmortem facility.
The mosque authorities who heard of this situation offered their prayer hall to conduct postmortem of people, irrespective of religion or caste. Over the next couple of days, the prayer hall served as a temporary postmortem facility.
This act of humanity by the mosque received appreciation and was termed as one of the gestures which would strengthen communal harmony. Many of the bodies are yet to be found.
