Puttur, Aug 16: The police personnel of the town station here took into possession a vehicle in which beef was being transported illegally. They also confiscated 700 kg beef found in the car. They had to chase the vehicle before they could intercept it.
The arrested persons have been identified as Mustaq (50), resident of Muneera Manzil at Karbala Road, Kudroli Mangaluru, Taufiq (26) from Kalladka Golthamajalu, and Mohammed Kabir (40), resident of Kalladka-Vittal Road.
The police had got information that beef was being transported in a white Mahindra Xylo vehicle that was moving from the direction of Uppinangady towards Puttur. Town station police inspector, Thimmappa Naik, and a constable waited for the vehicle near Kemmayi. When the suspect vehicle reached the spot the police signalled it to stop. Those in the vehicle overlooked the police directions and sped towards the town.
The police gave the vehicle a hot chase and succeeded in intercepting it near D G Bhat Compound on the road leading to Parladka from Mahamayi temple road. During the scrutiny, they found beef inside the vehicle. They got to know that it was being taken to Mangaluru from Belur. The accused revealed that they had information about the presence of police check post at Bollar in Uppinangady. Therefore they had planned to reach Puttur via Nekkilady and then drive their vehicle to Mangaluru.
700 kg beef worth Rs 1.25 lac, a Xylo car worth about five lac rupees, three cell phones in the possession of the accused, and two plastic tarpaulins used to pack the beef, totally worth Rs 6,35,500 were confiscated.
The police have filed cases stating that the accused had prepared beef by stealing cattle, violation of registration certificate conditions, and driving the vehicle recklessly at high speed among others.
