The Charmadi Ghat road on Mangaluru-Villupuram National Highway-73 has been witnessing very heavy rainfall since August 8. On August 10, due to the storm and continuous heavy rainfall, landslides and uprooting of trees were reported in many areas on the Ghat stretch.

The National Highway Authority executive engineer for Mangaluru region submitted a plea to the DC to ban traffic, so that repair work can be taken up in a smooth manner. Also, travelling in the Ghat region could prove risky as the road is severely damaged in several places. The DC who looked into the plea submitted by the executive engineer, decided to announce the ban for a month keeping safety of the motorists in mind.

The Charmadi ghat road is over 60 years old and yet one does not understand why each year during monsoons we have these repeated problems. Why cant this road be developed and maintained with long term interests in mind?. Each year crores of rupees are spent in repairing during the off season and come monsoon we hear the same story of landslides and destruction and the money is simply washed down the drain. It is very easy to understand that this is deliberate and corruption is the root cause for this. Why does the government not confiscate the assets of the contractors and levy heavy fines to pay for these repairs?

The Dc / representatives should take a look at the way the NHAI has dug through and created roads. any person looking at the steep 90 deg cuts will tell you how dangerous it can be . if it was rocky its understandable
