Bengaluru: Schools to be open on Sundays to make up for lost time?

Daijiworld Media Network - Bengaluru (MS)

Bengaluru, Aug 14: The intensity of rain has reduced in some taluks of the state. The school going children have got many leaves because of the incessant rains. The public instruction department has reportedly taken various actions to upkeep the health and safety of students.

Many school are converted as relief centres for the stay of people affected by deluge. Some schools have collapsed due to the downpour. The government has to make alternative arrangements in such places for the education of children.

The education department of the state of Karnataka is thinking of holding classes on the upcoming holidays and also full day on Saturdays. The classes will continue as prescribed in the month of April as per the information provided by the officers of the school education department.

K G Jagadish, commissioner of public instruction department said, "During natural calamity we do not give importance to running the schools. It is left to the discretion of the zonal education officers and the head teachers of various schools to conduct the additional classes in order to compensate for the lost classes. They are instructed to cooperate with the district administration in this matter."

The public instruction department is also monitoring whether classes can be held in the school buildings, which are damaged due to rains. Engineers of PWD, Panchayat Raj and Rural departments are also asked to conduct the inspection of schools with regards to their structural safety.

The public instruction department has also asked the Deputy Directors of Public Instructions (DDPI) to submit a report within August 16, if the school children have lost books or other study materials in the recent deluge.

Such holidays should be only for school students and not grown ups as they should know how to take care of themselves; for that matter DK did not have such ferocious rains like other parts!! Declaring emergency holidays frequently to elder students is unwarranted (unless otherwise of a big catastroph) & tends to make them complacent & take things lightly!

BTW, read the big inspirational story of Jaykumar Vaidya's, a students, journey from the slums of Mumbai to a full.paid scholarship PhD student at Virginia!

our comments says that you have accepted 90% of my comments. There is a vast difference between the education system in N.Y. and in South Kanara. Sad to say here students are carrying luggage (school bags) on their back and will be under pressure if their weekly off is cancelled. It becomes all study and no play. So cut down mid term and christmas vacation to just 3 days. Cut down annual vacation from 50 days to just 35 days. This will be able to make up for lost days during rainy seasons. Keep the festival holidays.

    Eric Coelho, Mangalore,

I don't fully agree with your comments. As these students have lost many hours of classes due to rains, floods, and also many other reasons. I lived in New York and when there was heavy snowfall, schools were closed as it was risky for the students. I very well know, how I had to take my daughter and son after doing evening shift in a hospital. That was life and God paid for our struggle. Schools were closed during such weather but the school board issued notices that they had to make up for the last hours by cutting down on some holidays.

Always keep one day a week as rest day and i.e., sunday. Instead cancel all festival holidays, cancel schools having 2nd and 4th Saturday as holidays, reduce Oct., holidays to just 3 days, reduce christmas holidays to 3 days. Wrong decision by govt.

It is ok if children & teachers get Rain or natural calamities holiday. In simple "Keep festival holidays intact, keep weekly off intact, cancel Mid vacation from 10 days to 3 days, cancel christmas vacation from 7 days to 3 days, cancel 2nd and 4th saturday, reduce summer vacation from 50 days to 35 days. If these cut off holidays are not acceptable to students, teachers and parents, then you are building your kids of being good human beings in the future. If you gain one way make a sacrifice other way. We have good human beings and not super heroes.

Everyday teachers instill values in the kids to become good human beings.. Students and teachers don't need to work during summer vacation dussera vacation Christmas vacation or any mid day holidays to teach these values. Everyone has struggles no matter which part of the world they live in no matter their occupation. Make useful comments to enhance empathy.

Students will go to school... Coz they love their school... Teachers love their jobs... Government decided the schools will follow... But why are other lay people commenting suggesting and laying down rules... Do u see teachers and students telling you to take a pay cut, cut down your vacation,etc.. Just because we are entitled to opinions should not give you freedom to dictate.
