Bengaluru, Aug 13: With the flood situation receding in Northern Karnataka region even while heavy rains continued in the Malnad and Coastal regions, the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) has taken the gloves
off to attack ruling BJP in the State and at the Centre and has directly accused Primed Minister Narendra Modi of ‘turning a blind eye’ to the mayhem caused by the floods in the State.
KPCC Chief Dinesh Gundu Rao has said the indifference and lack of response shown by the Prime Minister to the misery caused by the worst-ever flood havoc in the State has 'highlighted the unprecedented level of incompetence and ineptitude'’ of BJP and Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa.
"Does any government exist at all in State and the Centre? Such crass reception to the woes of people is insane,’’ the Congress leader said.
The Congress has urged the Centre to declare the situation as national calamity and immediately release of Rs 5,000 crore to the State for taking up relief and rehabilitation of the affected people.
The State government has sought immediate relief of Rs 3,000 crore from the Centre even as the damage to public and private properties/infrastructure was more than Rs 50,000 crore, the KPCC Chief said.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman have already conducted whirlwind tours and aerial surveys in northern parts of the State but disappointed the flood affected people, he said.
Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa has even termed the rain havoc the 'biggest calamity in 45 years'.
With a one-man State Cabinet, a 'Governor-type rule' prevailed in the State. The Congress would be forced to launch protests if the government did not respond to the problems of the flood-affected people in the next few days, Dinesh Gundu Rao warned.
Former MP V S Ugrappa gave an ultimatum to the Modi regime to release an interim relief of Rs 5,000 crore to help the state tide over the flood crisis.
KPCC president Dinesh Gundu Rao, adding that during the UPA rule, then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had announced Rs 1,600 crore immediately after the survey of flood hit areas.
"Is the state under President rule?" asked Dinesh Gundu Rao.
